Captain L. Jonas was a detective on the Chicago Police Department and the youngest captain on the force.

Biography[]

Jonas worked his way up the ranks, growing infuriated with Carl Kolchak and other reporters often asking for information on crime scenes, and developing a pathological hatred of reporters. Thus, upon being promoted to Captain, he used his rank to abuse reporters and openly break any law relating to Freedom of the Press. When Harold "Swordsman" Baker murdered Joe Morton, Jonas was placed in charge of the investigation. The only witness swore that the killer, Baker, was headless, and Jonas promptly had the man committed to a mental asylum. When Kolchak asked questions about the crime, Jonas announced his intentions for abusing reporters, and promptly had Kolchak's car towed.

Kolchak later attempted to interview Jonas and trick him into believing Morton was the son of a rich man. Jonas angrily responded he was too smart for Kolchak, and loudly proclaimed that he would never give Kolchak any information, while inadvertently telling him several details about the case. Unaware of what he had done, Jonas smugly watched Kolchak leave.

After the death of Henry “Studs” Spake, Jonas took Lila Morton into police protection, and ignored Lila and Kolchak’s attempts to convince him Baker’s ghost was the culprit. After Kolchak defeated Baker, Jonas was demoted to traffic duty for his incompetent handling of the case and flagrant violations of the law.
